‘Bond 50′ collection announced for Blu-ray

MGM has announced the “Bond 50″ collection on Blu-ray Disc. The 23-disc set, which doesn’t have a release date yet, will contain every James Bond film from Dr. No (1962) through Quantum of Solace (2008). That’s all 22 films! The 23rd disc, in case your asking, will contain never-before-seen content from the Bond archive. Each disc will also contain extra bonus content adding up to over 130 hours. James Bond film directors John Glen (For Your Eyes Only, Octopussy, A View to a Kill, The Living Daylights & Licence To Kill), Martin Campbell (GoldenEye, Casino Royale) and Michael Apted (The World Is Not Enough) got together to make the announcement at CES 2012 in Las Vegas. Casino Royale’s Caterina Murino, and Quantum of Solace’s Olga Kurylenko, were also at the big announcement. The Blu-ray Disc collection will retail for $299. Too pricey? You can pre-order right now from Amazon.com for $199.

‘Skyfall’ will be next James Bond film

Over what seems to have been an eternity producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli finally announced the title of the next James Bond film. Bond 23, as it has been referred to, will be called Skyfall. The film will star Daniel Craig as James Bond, Judi Dench as M, and Javier Bardem, Naomie Harris and Bérénice Marlohe — their roles as of yet to be revealed. According to director Sam Mendes (American Beauty), Skyfall will be shot in locations in China such as Shanghai, as well as Istanbul and Scotland. Skyfall is slated for release on November 9, 2012. The film will celebrate the release of the first James Bond film, Dr. No, in 1962.

Netflix adds streaming Bond films

Netflix has added 14 James Bond films to their streaming “Instant Watch” online service. What’s more, the films are available in HD. The newer films (from 1990 and present) are not available digitally yet but you can always rent the DVD or Blu-ray Discs by mail. The quality looks great (for movies this old) and it sure is fun to watch them commercial free. Nice job Netflix!

Can swimsuit model Irina Shayk act?

If she can we want her to be the next Bond girl!

Model Irina Shayk, who was selected for this year’s cover of Sports Illustrated’s swimsuit edition, gets our vote as the next Bond girl… if she can act. She has only really appeared in SI shorts, as a guest on TV shows, and presented the Top 10 list on the Late Show with David Letterman. But could she pull off acting alongside Daniel Craig in the next Bond film? The Russian-born model will appear Feb. 18 on The Ellen DeGeneres Show promoting the Sports Illustrated publication – and will no doubt give Ellen some tips on how to model in a bikini.

Bond 23 gets greenlight

We’ve been waiting for this and finally MGM and EON Productions have announced the next James Bond film will start production later this year. Daniel Craig and Judi Dench will return in Bond Number 23 (Craig starred in the last two Bond films, while Dench has played “M” since 1995). Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and John Logan will write the screenplay. American Beauty director Sam Mendes will direct the film which is scheduled to release on Nov. 9, 2012. Man that’s a time long way. But, with The Hobbit Part 1 also slated for release in 2012, it’s going to be a great year.

Brosnan to return to TV?

According to Reuters former Bond actor Pierce Brosnan may return to television for a Sony Pictures TV project. Sony is apparently shopping the TV series internationally, which would be about international espionage and follow a main character who is a problem solver. Unfortunately, Brosnan is not expected to play the main character (which seems like a huge mistake), but rather a supporting role. We’ll keep you posted when we hear more.

Banker buys Bond’s ‘64 Aston Martin

A US banker from Cincinnati has purchased James Bond’s 1964 Aston Martin DB5 in a rare car auction. Harry Yeaggy, who runs Union Savings Bank, says he always wanted the car, and was willing to pay the modest price of $4.6 million for it. The ‘64 DB5 was used in the Bond films “Goldfinger,” “Tomorrow Never Dies” and most recently in “Casino Royale.” It will be kept in his private car museum in Ohio.

MGM funding The Hobbit, what about Bond?

Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit film recently got the green light to start production in Feb. 2011, with MGM being the last studio to commit funding of the film. But what about funding for the next Bond film? If you remember, Bond 23 was already in production last winter when the studio suddenly pulled the plug. MGM, who has had financial troubles, has since been unable to put more money into the film and so production has been in limbo. However, MGM announced in Sept. that their dept payment period was extended through the end of October, 2010, opening up the possibility of shooting Bond 23 mid 2011.

Nolan’s Inception inspired by Bond films

Christopher Nolan’s Inception will hit theaters on July 16, 2010 and will no doubt remind you of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969), which Nolan says is his favorite James Bond film. “I’ve been plundering from the Bond movies in everything I’ve done, forever. I grew up loving them and they’re just a huge influence on me,” Nolan told Empire magazine. Read more
